Seasonal Maintenance for your Vehicle

There are a few times a year when it is really necessary to give your car a quick check for the unique seasonal challenges our canadian weather can present to our vehicles.Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a qualified professional the following items need to be taken care of :

Winter Check-ups

• Check your anti-freeze for proper strength. It should be good to -35 degrees Celsius.
• Check and replace your windshield wiper blades, especially for night driving and encounters with rain, sleet and snow.
• Check your motor oil. Review your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended winter rating.
• Check Belts and Hoses: Check all rubber belts and hoses... any that are cracked, frayed or worn should be replaced before winter.
• Check your tires and tread depth. Driving in cold Ontario conditions and on icy, snowy roads requires as much traction as your tires can deliver. Replace them if you see worn tread or sidewall damage.
• Check your battery and charging system. Fall and winter driving requires more power from your battery, so consider buying a stronger, heftier battery. Batteries lose power as the temperatures drop - so not only do you need more power to start the car, but you also get less power from your battery. Check for loose cables or terminals. Locate your booster cable and move to a convenient spot in your vehicle.
• Check the headlights, taillights, reverse lights and signaling lights for problems - at least once every few months. Have someone walk around the car and observe while you test the brakes and turn signals.
• Double-check rear window defroster: If some of the lines don't work, they can be repaired.

Spring Check-ups

• Wiper blades play an extremely important role in increasing visibility, especially during heavy rainstorms. Replace them when cracked, cut, torn, of if they streak or chatter when wiping.
• Summer is the time when most of our clients take long road trips. Check your spare tire and tire jack. Make sure your spare tire can be easily removed - the locking mechanism may be rusted through. Check if the jack is still operable (you may need to oil its hinges).
• If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible. A quick fix with a little clear nail polish on the scratch will hold you over until you get proper touchup supplies.
• Have us check your car's wheel alignment. Improper wheel alignment may easily cause a car to skid at a high speed and also leads to uneven wear on your tires.
• A good rule of thumb is that a change of season equals a change of oil.
